Unit 1/2

Hey guys,
I've been hearing rumours that Unit 1/2 of chem has absolutely no correlation with the 3/4 course.
Can anyone confirm this? Is it even worth getting a tutor for 1/2 Chem if I'm kinda behind?

Unit 2 has plenty of relevance (~90%). Unit 1 has less relevance (the history part is useless), but is still very crucial to know.

That has to be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard...Units 1/2 is absolutely crucial to the 3/4 course. Chem is actually one of the few subjects in which the units build upon the knowledge of each other. However, in saying that, it's probably not necessary to get a tutor for 1/2 Chem unless you are having serious difficulty...

There is stuff from unit 1 which I didn't understand properly then and regret not knowing it now. Pretty clear that 1/2 is important for building a base so that you can actually understand the concepts in year 12...

Unit 1 and Unit 2 is your foundations for your unit 3/4...You'd have to be an "absolute" genius to go for unit 3/4 without unit 1/2, and even then, you'd be slightly struggling to catch up just for awhile :x So yes, unit 1/2 is imperative for unit 3/4

Unit 3/4 will be like gibberish if you don't understand the key concepts in Units 1/2

Sarcasm LOL.... I hope it is anyway :P

AND I'd just like to share my fb status that relates to Bohr.
Chem teacher: "It's the 100th year for Bohr's model."
Friend: "Can we have a party?"
Chem teacher: "What? A Bohring party?"
LOLS at the pun.

Oh... yeah 1/2 chem is very helpful.

I thought only burberry made bad jokes like that? :P

Anyways, unit 1 is very important (maybe not so much the history). Knowing the periodic table, understanding the trends, knowing all of the bonding (especially intermolecular forces) are key to understanding why things happen in 3/4. Unit 2 is more directly related, with concepts taught (organic, redox, electrochemical cells) that are revisited in 3/4 in much greater depth.

Who told you this?

Unit 1/2 is the basic foundation of Chemistry and builds upon it in 3/4.

no arrogance intended here. yes units 1 & 2 are important. but there are only key ideas that you need to focus on in unit 1 & 2 for units 3 & 4.

I never did chem 1 & 2. I picked up chem 3 & 4 in year 12, n during the summer holidays into year 12, i covered the entire 1 & 2 course in 2 months flat. so saying that you would struggle to catch up in 3 & 4 without 1 & 2 is kinda untrue. I think it just comes down to how well you recognise what is key to year 3 & 4 n what is just there for extra knowledge :D
