The Effect of Youtube

Most schools have 'youtube' banned.

From Term 2 onwards MacRobertson's Girls High School will be unbanning it...quote them;

Quote
Mac.Rob believes that digital technologies, such as YouTube, are valuable learning and teaching resources. We also acknowledge that these technologies need to be used in a discerning and responsible manner.  As our students are spending increasing amounts of time learning and collaborating online, Mac.Rob in conjunction with parents is endeavouring to foster a culture of responsible and ethical online behaviour.

It seems like a good idea if it is used for educational purposes. If it is to help students than it should be fine. I have found some good things on there that helped me out for my subjects last year such as step by step guides for drawing methods to refresh my memory and also sport scientists explaining tricky concepts in PE.

Although, I can see them quickly banning it again if they abuse the right they have been given.

Most likely. In all my time of bludging on library computers during frees, I have never seen it been used for anything educational.

Personally, I don't care either way. I can't seeing it being used for educational purposes by anyone other than the uber-nerds (I'm talking MHS/MacRob uber-nerds too), but then again, those people probably don't need YouTube for help anyway.

All that matters is that CS isn't banned at my library :)

I think MacRob is the only school who could classify unbanning youtube a 'risk' ;D

(maybe this is MHS's chance to get back that no. 1 ranking that the class of '10 lost)

I wouldn't waste my internet balance on youtube anyway. It'd cost me like a dollar to watch a documentary on there at school.

You have to pay for internet usage at your school? We don't! (It's not in the school fees either)

Just something that popped in my mind due to what Rohitpi said.
It also depends on what other websites and privileges MacRob actually allow their students to have.
If they are allowed to open up .exe files like he seems to be able to do then they are probably playing games and all that in their free time anyways. However, it could have merit if students use it in their frees as an 'escape' to listen to some songs with friends or to watch a video or two.

YouTube is great for learning! Especially for bio, where I can watch animations and actually visualize the process. There is also videos of great teachers that explain concepts pretty well. I like it, if you use YouTube wisely, you will actually find some benefits.

Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me.

Your schools on TPG , clearly.
About Philosophy

When I see a youth thus engaged,—the study appears to me to be in character, and becoming a man of liberal education, and him who neglects philosophy I regard as an inferior man, who will never aspire to anything great or noble. But if I see him continuing the study in later life, and not leaving off, I should like to beat him - Callicle

Haha, most schools are tied into a Government scheme run by iiNet/Netscape to provide free, fast internet to schools. It's free!

YouTube is actually an amazing resource. I'm surprised it's blocked at Mac.Rob.
