Can sleep deprivation be cured?

This is an odd question we got for a sac assignment to which so far i have mentioned we build up a "sleep debt" that can be removed through sleeping more the first following being sleep deprived and then subsequently less until you are back to sleeping the average amount each night.
I'm still not sure however, but this is all that is mentioned in the textbook.

If anyone knows any different or can ad to this that would be apreciated  :) :) :) :) :)

Yes, that's what I read from the textbook as well...you make up the sleep you've been deprived of th next time you sleep

If you're talking about fatal familial insomnia, the genetic disease where you can't fall asleep for the rest of your life until your demise, then yes, there hasn't been a cure for that yet.

Basically there are no long term repurcussions of total or partial sleep depravation. Both can be cured, through removing the build up 'sleep debt' as you have said. For total sleep depravation, for people subject to it, generally from convienience samples we can see that people after a long long time awake they generally sleep more in the following days, up to 14-16 hours for one guy if i remember correctly. So basically the effects from sleep depravation are only temporary, for total, hallucinations + paranoia + micro sleeps etc and there are others more subte for partial such as lack of attention at some times.

Hope that helped.

Although you should be careful not to make such a definite statement. We haven't tested this out you know...

Peter Tripp, the 1950s radio host and Randy Gardner, a high school student are two well known case studies of prolonged sleep deprivation. I think you are referring to one of these case studies as Tripp spent 13 hours sleeping after staying awake for days while Gardner spent 15 sleeping.

Just extra information...
