Thanks man :). I'll pretty much know after results day, depending on if I bomb horribly or do really well again.

Tangentially related: if you wanted to end up doing law at Monash, but it doesn't look like you're going to manage the required ATAR, would it be better to start law at a different uni and try to transfer into Monash, or start a different undergraduate degree in Monash (like Arts), and then transfer in from within the school? Or is there really no difference, so long as you manage a HD average?

Depends on you really and what risks you're willing to take

Law at different uni
- it may be harder to get the required average with law subjects than with other disciplines
- if you do manage to get into Monash, getting credit might be difficult. I know someone who transferred from VU law and had to repeat first year because Monash would not give credit for the subjects she had done at VU. Deakin is fine though, not sure about other unis
HOWEVER
- you'll still end up with a law degree even if you don't get into Monash

Internal transfer within Monash
- depending on the degree you choose it is probably easier to get the required average (75+ to be competitive, which is significantly easier to get in something like arts than it is in law)
- you'll get credit for all the subjects you did in first year so you will not have wasted any time (assuming you'd be transferring from arts to arts/law; if transferring from arts to straight law, you will probably not get credit for your arts subjects. but I would recommend heavily against doing straight law)
HOWEVER
- you may not get into law at all and 1) risk being stuck with just an arts degree and/or 2) have to take the LSAT to try to get into the JD which is definitely not guaranteed because the LSAT isn't exactly a walk in the park

Monash does not require an LSAT for JD entry (Melbourne is the only law school I know of who has a MANDATORY requirement - Sydney "suggests" LSAT to boost your application).

I received a "full-fee" place today, and I didn't complete the LSAT. (No chance in hell I'm accepting something that costs $34k p/year to study, but that's another story)

The debt is huge but theoretically if you have no other choice, it seems like it's worth it if you really want to get into law. I think its pretty exploitative on behalf of the university looking to profit off peoples dreams but ultimately it seems like you'd make that ~90K back over the course of a law career compared to not getting in.

[off-topic but sue me] I'm not sure whether it's exploitative by the university, or rather the federal government that is exploiting the tertiary education sector. Universities lose money on every CSP place, and they are forced to recoup those losses with IFPs and DFPs.

That's for Monash yes? I suppose you're a little late for taking the LSAT now. Have you tried another university for Law? I thought you were all into Economics haha

TIL! Thanks for correcting me.

Isn't there a HELP equivalent for full-fee places?

Yes, Monash's JD can be put on FEE-HELP, but at the end of the day 30k is 30k - you still have to pay it back (Plus inflation). Plus, I only applied to see if I'd get it - was only ever going to consider a CSP place.

And my dream of Economics is dead after I somehow managed to get 56% on my Macro Exam. (Still no idea how - it was ridiculously hard - but I didn't think I did that badly)

Hi guys, I just got my results today. Got a WAM of 82.38 for 1st year BA. I've been pretty stressed about getting into law for the whole year, and just wish I had some closure sooner rather than later. Any clues on whether I have a good chance of getting an offer? Cheers!

Congrats, that is a great average! Anecdotally, I think you should be fine - you definitely don't have any cause for stress.

Thanks guys! Any idea when the offers might come out? I know the website says 17th of January, but could they give offers earlier?

I think they'd have to wait for the Year 12s? So I'm assuming it will be Jan 17th.
