What does it mean when you need to put "Heart and Soul" in your expository writing?

About Philosophy

When I see a youth thus engaged,—the study appears to me to be in character, and becoming a man of liberal education, and him who neglects philosophy I regard as an inferior man, who will never aspire to anything great or noble. But if I see him continuing the study in later life, and not leaving off, I should like to beat him - Callicle

Many school teachers hate the straight-forward and boring nature of expositories, but that's really how they're meant to be written. You can't really put much 'heart and soul' into it, which I assume is her way of saying some element of flair.

Your other examples don't need to have any relation to Shark Net. Nor are you obliged to use certain parts of the text or anything - the focus of the essay is on reality, not The Shark Net. This isn't a text response and you're technically not really obliged to mention Shark Net at all in your essay for that matter. From what I've seen, what you're doing is fine for an exam level. Just write what your teacher prefers you to for SACs and do whatever you prefer (which I assume is expository) for the exam.

EDIT: o.O why'd you delete the other 90% of your post. Well I'll leave the rest of my post which was responding to that here.

Soz Shinny lol, the other 90% felt like a rant more than anything else >; .

I"m worried, all the other teaches have said Shark Net should only be 1 paragraph or 15% of your essay or whatever. Whilst she has insisted on it being my main piece of evidence, as suggested, my nominated text, or somehow, my other evidencs needs to somewhat show a connection to my previous evidence or Sharknet, whatever that means. Even the examples we went through to support the prompt was purely "Shark Net."

In the case of cross examination between essays at school, won't I be at a disadvantage by following my English teacher? I feel so fuccckkkkked for monday's sac She seems to accept philosophers but not my global evidence, T_T.

But thanks again Shinny, I'll change my expository from a standard one to  whatever she wants. To that, I am clueless, and will find out tommorow when I give her a new one that perhaps will be to her liking.

If this fails, Imaginative like the rest of the class.

Nothing wrong with rants :)

I disagree a bit with Shinny regarding how they're meant to be written. Yes, you can have a very dry, factual, meaningful and well-written expository essay (and score well), but there is no reason why you can't add some flamboyancy into it. I think that's what you could loosely call "heart and soul" - flare, flamboyancy and passion about the topic - writing about something that is meaningful to you rather than taking a boring and banal stance on a topic. Being creative and vibrant doesn't just have to be left to the persuasive and imaginative domains, it can also work in an expository piece. You can incorporate a strong use of voice and really give it a distinct feel, even use humour. You're exposing a set of ideas and exploring a topic, but this can be done in a number of ways - you need to keep the reader engaged. If not from the sheer intellectual solidarity of the piece, at least from the way it's written. A lot of those feature columns in newspapers are essentially "expository" pieces, and not all of them pertain to that dull and overly formal style that is typically viewed as "expository".

There are 3 main styles of writing:

- Expository
- Persuasive
- Imaginative

The purpose of an expository essay is to explain and explore the prompt you are given in an objective manner. You'd have to give facts to support your arguments.

No, you do expository essays in Year 10 and 11 as well.
