Do we have to use the tilde (~) sign under i, j....?

I've always been confused about that... some teachers say we have to use it others say we don't and I cant seem to find the answer in the examiners report :(

The teachers at my school deduct marks for not using the tilde, and they claim that examiners will do the same.

Its not hard to put a tilde below the vector components anyway....

This. If you are working with scalars and vectors at the same time, the tilde helps to distinguish which ones are which.

I would. My teacher's kinda tight with the tildes, we lose marks if it is not included...

I guess it would be good to include them all come exam time, as who knows, the examiner might be cranky from marking all the spesh exams and just take marks off for "silly" things like that :P

It must be wrong, but I heard it's the same as the states/sig figs in Chem, if you don't do them you lose a mark on the exam...

You lose like one mark over the whole exam for not having them.

That said,  definitely include them because you need them for a loooong time, especially if you're doing maths in uni.

unless you want to bold every vector, using a tilde is the easiest way to go.

They teach you to use the tilde for your own benefit I would say, it's easier to follow your own working out.
