can somebody explain what counterbalancing is and the operationalisation of the dependant variable?

Counterbalancing...ehh the textbook is the best at explaining it, couldn't really do it better myself.

Counterbalancing:
Used to control or minimise order effects such as practice or carry-over. It involves systematically changing the order of treatments or tasks because order effects can be a confounding variable. There are two types of counterbalancing -

1. Between-participants: Half the group has IV then no IV, and the other half has no IV, then IV. The results are combined for both groups so then any difference is due to the IV rather than order effects such as practice.
2. Within-participants: Each person experiences each condition in each order (e.g. rate Pepsi then Coke, then later, rate Coke then Pepsi)
