How do you know if you're working hard enough?

So how can you tell whether you're working hard enough in your studies?

How do you know if you're working at the peak of your own individual capacity?

Is there a way you can know that you can do better?

I know this is a bit of a tricky question, but if you can answer it, it'd be greatly appreciated!  :P

During exam period, if I drop a mark in a practice exam or if I don't understand a question which is within the study design then I know that I can still work harder.

Having said that, I'm happy if I don't lose over 3-4 marks

+1 to this.
No matter how hard your working, you can, theoretically, always work harder. You can do more exams, write more notes or answer more questions. Even if you're getting 100% on practice exams, there still may be concepts you haven't come across, or understood in enough depth, that may screw you up in the actual exams.
So, no, I don't think you can know. I just do as much study as I can fit in without giving up social life/job/downtime etc. And I'll never know if that's at the peak of my capcity, but it's all I really can do (without becoming a hermit).

Your progress in your grades
Ancient Persian Proverb; " I Wept because i had no Shoes, until i saw a man with no feet!"

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out --

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me.

You know you're working too hard when you lose motivation, when you have no time to spend with friends, when VCE seems like it's the world. You're definitely working too hard when you have no time to have an outlet and when your emotions seem as though they're cracking under the stress.

Please, please, please do not compromise your wellbeing for VCE.

I remember reading somewhere from a very awesome book that if you're too busy and into it to the point where you can't stop and appreciate what's around you, then there's a serious problem going on.

Flowery, I admit, but there are no truer words that I had taken to heart throughout the years.

Nah it wasn't that. It was a self-help book (yes I actually read those) about...surprise surprise: doing well in school.

About Philosophy

When I see a youth thus engaged,—the study appears to me to be in character, and becoming a man of liberal education, and him who neglects philosophy I regard as an inferior man, who will never aspire to anything great or noble. But if I see him continuing the study in later life, and not leaving off, I should like to beat him - Callicle
