Failed Chem

hey, im in yr 11 and Ive pretty much failed chem (got like 30% on the exam)
... ive tried but yea, Chemistry is just not for me, but now my parents are letting me drop it??  :o

I don't even know why, I think they want me to do medicine or something? I probably won't even get in.

I've been doing well in everything else but not chem

Anyway what should I do?
My parents seriously don't listen when I tell them I'm failing, they just tell me try harder???????????????
I sort of have 3 options (will include advantages and limitations)

(1) I actually try in chem, I think if I tried harder I could do ok... Advantages: I do OK in chem, don't have to drop it... Disadvantages: I'll need to put in a lot more effort and my other subs will suffer, and theres the possiblity that I still suck at chem even when I try
(2) I ignore chem altogether and just let it rot in my subjects in the bottom 2..... obviously this is a bad option but im telling u, my parents just dont understand
(3) I perform bad on purpose and hope they realise I SUCK and let me drop it (note: this may backfire and they could just tell me to work harder)

And yes, I have tried to reason with my parents BUT they seriously just tell me to try harder  :coolsmiley:
so yea please don't say : explain to ur parents your failing ...etc.....I have said that a lot!

I think you should stick with it and just try harder. One of the regrets I have from Methods 3/4 last year was not putting in 100%. I barely did any work and ended up with a dismal 24. That has limited my opportunities for Uni this year and its because I didn't put in the effort. Get yourself a tutor or try organise with your teacher to stay behind one day after school or see them at lunch time or organise some time to study with a friend who is good at Chem. Don't give up though. Especially if its something you enjoy..

BUT if you really hate it then drop it. And tell your parents to fuck off. Its your VCE, not theirs. Sometimes you gotta be assertive with your parents. Don't ask them if you can drop it, tell them your not going to be continuing it next year.

If you feel there is room for improvement I'd try and stick with it for this semester. You can drop it at the end of year 11 if you are still unhappy.

Having said that, if you are really finding it extremely difficult and if you are not enjoying it and it is making you miserable, then just replace for another subject. Just ignore your parents; it's your choice on what subjects you want to undertake in VCE and what course you want to do at uni and not theirs. It's your future.

Firstly, I wouldn't do that. If you hate the subject and performing bad at it, then drop it. There's point in suffering through a hated subject or you will regret it after.

I dropped chem at the end of Yr 11.
I was really struggling with it and couldn't be bothered putting in the time or effort required.

On the one hand I kinda wish I hadn't as it would have helped with bio and to do many science subjects at uni I'll have to do a chem bridging course. However science isn't my first preference and looking at Unit 3 + 4 chem I know if I had kept it up I would be either failing or spending so much time on it I'd be neglecting the rest of my subjects.

If you have another subject in mind to replace chem I'd say drop it. Otherwise maybe hang in there till the end of the year and see if a bit more effort will help.

Metaphorically I meant. Not literally

pete: its really your decision. it is not uncommon to fail unit 1 [fail as in get a low score]. even this might mean that you won't get a great score in 3/4, it does not necessarily imply that you won't do "well"

if you do want to continue it [as in you like the subject], then ask for all the help you can. its not the thing that you suck at chemistry, its the way you are being taught is not adequate. tell your parents to get you a tutor if they want you to continue with the study!

dont drop a subject because you think you suck in it. drop it if, and only if, you don't enjoy the course in general.

Yeah, good teachers are incredibly important in subjects such as chem, because there are a lot of things that only experience can explain.

That sounds fairly exaggerated...

:o...No way, I don't believe it. Oh well, if he can do it, anyone can do it. Just give it your 100% try, and never give up. Get as many info as you can, do your homework and stay in school. Don't go wagging. Remember "PRACTICE, REPEAT then PERFORM".
