quick questions

1) How do you tell what/how many bonds are in a fatty acid?
e.g. how can you tell that linolenic acid has a 3 carbon double bonds

Use the formula CnH2nO2 or CnH(2n+1)COOH

If it satisfies that equation, there are no double bonds present. For every double bond, 1 hydrogen is lost from each side of the double bond - hence for every double bond 2 hydrogens are lost.

having troubles with this one :S i got a, but cant seem to get b right..
im always off by one carbon atom when i write out the equation...
