Now in the process in starting to do practice exams and wondering whether I should do the older ones first (2007) or start with the 2010 ones and what companies should I attempt first?

I like to do them periodically, so 2008 onwards. I'm not really sure which companies are better/harder than others, but leave VCAA to last.

Am I the only person on ATARnotes who thinks doing VCAA exams first is a brilliant idea?

Nah I agree, great to see the difficulty/type of Qs asked, but I would do them at the very start and very end, with commerical filling the middle.

Yeah I agree :) Doing only non-VCAA exams from the start can leave you mis-directed but exhausting your VCAA exams early means you don't get an accurate test of how you'll go when you're at your peak.

It also doesnt hurt to do VCAA and 3rd party exams at the same time.  They can work as your benchmark to your performance.
