Do we need to know them for unit 3?
I know it doesn't list it on the study design, but several practise exams for the current study design that I've done have questions on them and I've just had to skip them.

they cover it in the unit 3 section in physics12 textbook but i don't think you'll need to know a great deal about them and i have never seen any questions with calculations involving phototransistors

I think all we need to know is it's an optical transducer. It's not a fast as a photodiode, but faster than an LDR. The Heinemann textbook goes into a bit of detail about them, but the Nelson book only briefly mentions them.

Which trials are you referring to?

Hmm ok thanks.

There's been a few of them, but the one I'm looking at right now is Chemology 2010
