should be 3-bromo-2-methlypentane yeah, because it's alphabetical? Just making sure because a prac exam has this topic's title as the correct answer for a question.  :idiot2:

Alphabetical, but VCAA doesn't follow the rule strict i don't think, they'll accept either.

ahahaaa it's alphabetical, that makes sense

i've been going Chloro-Bromo etc before methyl, thinking functional groups to be more important than side chains

wowowow dude functional groups ARE more important than sidechains, as in they should get the lowest possible carbon number.

But when you write it out, regardless of the afforementioned numbers, the prefixes should be listed in alphabetical order regardless of the numbers associated with them. have a look at my example again... they're both exactly the same compound, it's just the writing of it that uses alphabetical...

Must write out in alphabetical order, marks have been lost on previous VCAA exams for not using alphabetical order. Check 2008 if you want to see
