It depends on your school - you should check with the appropriate people.

I don't think so.

A few of my friends were able to do 3 subjects this year as they had done 3 last year but the minumum they were allowed (by our school) to do this year was 4.

I doubt it, that's basically not even doing year 12 haha, the lowest I've heard of doing is 3 at my friends school, but I'm pretty sure my school's minimum is 4

Most schools require you do at least 4 in Year 12 to be a full time student.
Most schools don't take part time students. :P

You have three years to start and complete your VCE. Don't see any restrictions on doing one subject from VCAA's end, but most schools won't let you.

Isn't the minimum of subjects you have to do per year 3?
‎"We divert our attention from disease and death as much as we can; and the slaughter-houses and indecencies without end on which our life is founded are huddled out of sight and never mentioned, so that the world we recognize officially in literature and in society is a poetic fiction far handsomer and cleaner and better than the world that really is."
- William James.

Happycat, a member here is only doing Methods this year. I think he's already had a couple ATARs as well
vce: english, methods, spesh, chemistry, physics, geography.
