Unit 4 Qs

So, was having a skim through a few different texts today in regards to Unit 4 stuff.

In Heinemann, Chapter 18 "The Chemical Industry: Risks and Rewards" seems like a bit silly - so I was wondering, do we need to know any of this stuff off by heart for the exam?

Also, I know we have to learn about a particular compound (sulfuric acid, ethene, ammonia) - do we just choose one and not learn about the others, how does this work?

Cheers

For the first part of your question about chapter 18 I'm not sure.
But for the second, your right, your school only choose one of those. My school chose ammonia.
My teacher said there will be a short answer question that asks a general question about those three compounds and you answer according to the compound that you learnt.

You'll find they'll all be fairly straight forward to learn. They each contain one rate limiting reaction that has a kinetics vs yield dilemma. You learn about safety hazards in that process, a few uses for them, and learn to talk about this dilemma they face. (And get a taste of what university chemistry is like, i.e. learning many many many many reactions.)

sulfuric acid is the easiest, most schools pick sulfuric acid.

Yeah, and I assume everyone needs to know the contact process, so sulfuric would be the most logical.

:) cheers
