Does it get any easier? :| [Methods 1/2]

Umm so I have always been pretty good at maths, last year in year 10 advanced maths I never got under 90% on a test or exam, and now this year in Methods Unit 1 the highest I have got on a SAC so far is 71% :|

And I got 52% on my mid year exam (the highest mark was like 74%)...

It's just annoying because I understand everything we do in class, all the homework etc yet I get horrible marks  :tickedoff:

So basically I just want to know if this is 'normal'? lol is this the same for anyone else or just me?  :-\
and if you're doing unit 3/4 methods how did you go in 1/2??

It depends on the school wether the exams and sacs are easier or they are just trying to scare the ones who are going to struggle out of methods for the year later. Is it that you are not getting the concepts of the maths, silly mistakes or just not putting enough effort in? Most of yr12 methods is just building on yr11 methods so it doesn't exaclty get easier, although it does become more enjoyable (except probability). If your top mark is 74% then the exams are probably just harder.

lol exactly happened to me. In year 10 I'm used to studying 10 mins or the class before my tests for maths and still getting B+ or A's but now you can't really do that.

Well I failed methods, on my both mid and end of year got about 50% (About 10-20% on non-CAS, but the CAS questions were straight forward and I knew how to use my calculator so got around 90% for CAS component). In what would equivalent to your year 10 math, I averaged probably about 30% for stuff relevant to methods.

But I found Methods 3/4 a lot easier and intuitive (Or maybe just a better teacher? Loved my 3/4 teacher), ended up scoring above the average of my cohort on the exams and did as well as I wanted too :)

Well most of the time it jsut comes down to how much work you put in, if you are motivated enough then you will do better, don't let this get you down.

Yeah well I understand everything, and I did so much study and not even my summary book helped at all in the tech exam lol, but on the technology free exam it was only /25 and the marking was so harsh, in a few questions I did all the right working out and completely understood how to do it, but made dumb mistakes with positive and negative signs, and as they were only worth a mark of course I got 0 :P

But I honestly can't use my CAS for shit, stupid thing kept giving me 'Syntax' and 'Error' in the technology exam  :tickedoff:
I would definitely would have got a few more marks if I knew how to use it lol all I can do is draw graphs on it :P

And I did study a lot, maybe I could have done a bit more, a few of my friends got lower scores than me and I know they studied soo much more than I did, soo idk  :-\

How long was the exam? As in, did time screw you or content. With practice you get faster so it shouldn't be an issue....chill!

It sounds like a difficult exam to me.

What was on it? how did others go?

Yeah I'm worried my scores will just keep getting worse though, and I don't wanna drop out of methods because it's a pre requesite for the course I want to do

90 minutes. 30 for non-calculator which was horrible as I completely rushed the end and there were a few questions I knew I made mistakes on but didn't have time to go back and fix them, and 60 for calculator allowed, which was okay but an extra 15 minutes would have been nice as I rushed the last couple of short answers haha

so then don't stress too much, it must have been a hard exam.

Yeah I'm just worried because I don't want to keep getting low scores -_-

It was like linear, quadratic and cubic equations.  There were like 25 multiple choice questions and I guessed a lot of them :P I got full marks for a lot of the short answers but the worded/application extended questions messed with my head, apparently they were easy to do with a calculator but of course I had no idea lol and I have always struggled a bit with worded questions.  And there were lot's domain and range questions too, and I think I got most of them wrong haha.

Well my 52% was surprisingly in the top 15 students (out of like 65 who do methods), and the top mark was 74% so most people found it really hard, so maybe my year level is just dumb lol but the teachers said they weren't expecting many people to do very well :|

Thats the thing, even with vcaa exams, as long as you are on top or near the top, it doesnt matter even if you and everyone else nearly fails, you are still up there. top 15 out of 65 means you are above 80% of the rest so thats pretty good. and hey if you did better than your friends you "studied more" than it means you probably "have it" and well they have to put more work in to just get to where you are, so don't stress don't worry too much.

don't worry too much at all dude, i know i defs found 1/2 quite challenging as there were just new and more complex concepts, it most definitely does get easier once you do it again in 3/4, it tends to just click more :) relax, it's only 1/2!  as long as you're learning from your mistakes you should be fine :)

Yeah I guess, that makes me feel better haha :D it's just kinda disapointing not doing great in what I thought was my strongest subject, but ohh well I guess it just means there goes my hopes of doing specialist next year lol :P

ooh really? :) yeah I hate learning new concepts lol I know unit 1/2 means nothing but I'm just scared that if i'm not doing too well now I am going to fail next year haha  :P
