Bachelor of Laws

I'm considering doing Law at Monash University next year amongst several other courses. I have a few questions regarding the course itself. What would the workload be like for a first-year Law student at Monash? Thought I'd ask to get a student's perspective. Also, are there any scholarships involved with the course specifically. I know other faculties have undergraduate scholarships, but I didn't see any for Law on Monash's website.

Cheers if anyone could answer my questions!

Can't speak on experience, but a lot of my friends do it. They say that there are some subjects which are killers wheras the others aren't too bad.

Scholarship wise, you probably can't expect one based on excellence unless you get 99.9+, that's how it is with Law. If you apply for Equity and Excellence (some of the criteria for which are pretty bullshit, that is a lot of people who aren't disadvantaged at all can qualify), the bar is lowered down to around 97-98.
vce: english, methods, spesh, chemistry, physics, geography.

Straight law or a double degree? (Workload is very different between the two)

Straight Law is a lot tougher (in the first year at least) compared to doing a double degree. Law subjects can be quite difficult when you first attempt them, as your reasoning, expression, study habits etc. must be modified. I have one friend doing straight Law, and he's already switching to a double degree.
By doing a double, you have only two law units (and only one that is difficult), so you get to ease into the degree.

And why do a straight LLB when the ATAR for a double degree is lower AND it's only an extra year of study? :P

Fair point. I've been thinking about that as well. I know Commerce/Law needed 98.25 last year, whereas Law needed 98.55. I'm undecided if I was choose a double degree; what other degree I would do with Law. I'm still exploring my options at the moment. If my Year 12/VCE subjects are indicative of anything, all I can say is that I definitely want to do something Law-related come next year. Hence, my first preference currently would be straight Law as opposed to a double degree with Law.

If you do straight law I highly recommend that you do 3 subjects instead of 4 per semester, at least for the first year while you get used to the workload (that is if you want to do well; if you just want to pass, doing nothing all semester and mass-cramming for the last 2 weeks before exams is more than sufficient)

Law subjects typically have low contact hours but very high personal study hours
