How to Tremolo on piano?

How do you actually tremolo (tap the same note over and over very fast)? When I try to do it the keys seem to come up too slowly so when I tap twice in succession the second tap won't make a sound. The keys come up faster when I tap harder but then I get some unevenness in sound. If I try alternating fingers it doesn't make much difference. Do you think it's a problem with my technique or my piano?

I think it's your piano - dyou have a grand or an upright?

Have you played Scarbo - Ravel? At the start of that theres a big tremolo bit in the RH. I found that I could never do it at home (I have an upright) but at performances I could do it really easily ...

Yeah I have an upright, I was trying to play the tremolos in Ravel's Alborada del Gracioso from Miroirs. Maybe it's just my piano... oh well I'll keep imitating the tremolo for practice :P
thanks for the confirmation tho

Because the hammers of a grand piano are arranged in such a way that they strike upwards when hit, gravity acts upon them to a higher degree than the ones on an upright. This in effect causes the hammer to return to its original position faster in grands than in uprights and thus makes it easier to play tremolos on a grand.

TLDR: Buy a grand piano.

I've always wanted to play the intro bit for 'Angry Young Man' by Billy Joel.

I fail at piano.
