For the conflict essay, how many texts which you have studied are you supposed to include?

My school studied both Omagh and Secret River. Am I supposed to be using both aswell as other references etc ??

At least one text, many include both, but remember, you must draw on other issues you have looked at during the year.
You MUST write down at least one of the novels you have studied down (where they ask you to).

NO statement of reflection needed in the exam.

Hmm, so is it better to include one or two texts?
Or does it make no difference, as long as you are using them effectively?

When you say draw on other issues, what do you mean? Like in terms of world wide issues, or just discussion in relation to the prompt? Eg. I'm doing the Imaginative Landscape, so do I say how the landscape shapes our perception, changes our mindset, etc? I'm so hazy about this... not sure how and what to discuss for context.

EDIT: I forgot to answer the question :P I'm probably going to do 2 texts, but focus mainly on one of them, which would be Fly Away Peter.

Good question - does writing on one or two texts advantage you in any way?

For weaker students, should we only focus on one?

I can't guarantee this, but possibly it might be detrimental? You're meant to have a key text from which your ideas are drawn, and if you use two texts equally, that might not meet the criteria of having a key text. Thing is, I assume VCAA will be quite lenient on it this year; but yet again, no guarantees. For weaker students, I always thought focusing on two would be easier because it'd give you access to more examples to explain/persuade your ideas depending on what writing style you're doing.

I think it would depend on how well you incoorporate your chosen text/s into your written piece.

I'm thinking of writing imaginatively. I want to write a diary entry about Thornhill encountering all the different situations he faces in 'The Secret River'. I am very profound in my diary writing (or so people say... I really don't know?), and am seriously considering this notion if we don't need to draw ideas from too many texts. Any suggestions?

Well the main problem I see coming from that is you're so intent on doing it, that I have a feeling once the time comes, you would've practised that style so much that you'd be reluctant to adapt the piece to the actual prompt given, because like any essay, it must relate DIRECTLY to the prompt and be inspired by it (not necessarily ANSWER it though in regards to context). And well yeh, thats the hardest part about imaginative - actually getting your ideas across obviously to the examiner, without overdoing it and writing something that doesn't actually even look like a diary entry. If you're confident that you can avoid these hurdles, then go for it, but overall I'd say only the confident and skilled should go for an imaginative..

But you shouldn't quote me on that.

I'd say focus heavily on just one text (incorporating some relevant past/present world issues). If you really want to, I suppose you could make reference to another text in a few brief sentences here and there, e.g. "Similarly, The Blah...", but IMO that seems a bit random.
