Is.. Recombination = Crossing over?
username:
I know it's such a stupid question, but I'm having lots of trouble with meiosis and stuff. It sounds like the same thing to me, but in past exam papers they say 'Recombination and crossing over', which makes me think that it might be two separate steps. What's the difference? :(
bturville:
I believe they're the same thing. Its just there for clarification I guess.
EDIT: Wikipedia says "recombination can also refer to artificial and deliberate recombination of disparate pieces of DNA, often from different organisms, creating what is called recombinant DNA."
So the question is just making it clear thats its talking about crossing over, not the artificial recombination example from above.
shinny:
If I remember correctly, crossing over is a TYPE of recombination? Perhaps.. o_O I don't remember too well....wiki it or something =T
NE2000:
Crossing over is a type of recombination I'm pretty sure. I'm not sure whether independent assortment of alleles on non-homologous chromosomes comes under a type of recombination and maybe that's why they mention both.
And bturville is correct about recombinant DNA, essentially recombination loosely just means mixing DNA together

Okay so..
Independent assortment -> non homologous
Crossing over -> homologous?
