Holidays. What to do?

Hey, just wondering in these holidays what should I do to prepare for methods 3/4?
&
What should YOU have done which you didn't do, and now regret, regarding methods?

To give myself the best possible chance to do well etc.

Thanks.

Well... Where to start? :P

I wouldn't have chosen it in the first place myself, but here's my tips for you:

- Read over the course and make sure you know how to use your CALCULATOR! I swear, I was relying on this all throughout exam 2 (my batteries almost ran out. :()

- Don't ever, ever, ever differentiate when you are meant to anti differentiate, or vice versa, it screws you up. :P

- Make sure you know, and memorise all of your exact values before school starts  (I done this, and it kind of helped :).)

- In the exams, if you can't do a question, leave it until the end, and do it later (not like I had done, and stared at this question for 20 minutes not knowing what the hell to do; and it was, like 3 marks when I wasn't even halfway through the paper :()

- Over the holidays, go over your textbook, and try to keep ahead of the class no matter what! If you read ahead, chances are that the teacher is probably going to talk about that next class anyway, so it will only benefit you.

- And for a grand finale, don't give up in the middle of the year! This is what I basically done when I couldn't handle it anymore. I can assure, if you are passionate about the subject, you will do well in it!

Good luck; all the best! ;)

I'll be going through the first 2 or so chapters so when I go to the summer school head start programs I will be able to take in more and understand what they are talking about. A good understanding of the first two chapters or so would give you a fantastic head start in preparation for your first SAC and also enable you to have some pressure taken off at the start of year 12 so you can ease into it.

If you really want to get a head start, know the basic stuff...stuff you learn in year 11... like the general shape of the graphs and how to deal with polynomial, exponential and log equations.

LoL. I remember this phase. The i want to get through the whole methods course before the end holidays phase. I stress quality over quantity. Make sure you understand what ur doing before you precede on to each chapter. I would recommend making summaries, to help you remember what you're doing.

Thanks!

I think that point about making summaries is a great idea, especially your own, personalised summaries of topics.
Didn't do it this year (ceebs factor), but probably a good idea to implement next year.

Another thing, how should I best use my tutor (freak uni kid)?

Don't attempt to learn chunks of the course off him/her. Do as many questions as you can (after you learn the course) and ask him all the problems you have trouble understanding, even if you get the right answer because concept and theory is very important (so you can apply it in other situations).

I'd say start with re consolidation of methods 1/2. Then functions and graphs (you'll breeze through it) and just do the  course in chronological order. You'll find a few things you're quite familiar with already.

All the above I didn't do and I deeply regret.

I think it would be best for bec to give some advice as she finished off the course before anyone but I haven't seen her around ever since she finished VCE.

Oh and post any questions you may have here if you want. Start off your own question thread like numerous people have done. People will be glad to help (I hope I can help as well because I'm becoming slower with methods stuff as I've realised whilst doing GMA.)

Thanks!

Is it worthwhile purchasing and using other textbooks? I'm using Maths Quest, as picked by the school.

Well Essentials is the most popular because it's got EVANS on the front and it does provide some more difficult questions.

I hear Maths Quest is good in explaining with examples but the questions aren't that great (never used it myself).

So I'd say it's up to you. I don't think there is a need, though.

I never had to really look at the examples and learn from the book. Most of the time the teacher teaches us (duh, right?) the things we need to know.

Well, I used it this year, and I agree, the explanations are of excellent quality. They also provide tech-free questions and summaries (but all text books do. :P)

But the questions are quite easy (although they made no sense to me).

I don't really think it's worth it either, I mean, others could explain to you what concepts mean anyways. :P
