How hard are they to come by?

Duck:
I'm hoping not too bad. I just got a job at Woolies and if I go to ANU (most likely) am not looking forward to leaving after 2 months. I don't think i'll even bother asking for a reference :p

Could you ask to transfer? The closest branch is in Dickson, which you can drive, bus or ride by bike to from ANU.

From my experience, pretty much anyone who wants a job in Canberra can get one. There is a large public service and a large amount of professionals in Canberra, which means that stores and restaurants/cafes tend to be looking for people quite often. The closest shopping centre is about a 20 minute walk away. Additionally, lots of people actually get jobs on-campus as there are a number of cafes there and ANU itself has a casual job register.

What I've heard echoes Eriny's statement. Apparently, because everyone wants to leave Canberra ASAP ('it's a hole') there's a big shortage in labour.

how long do you think you need to work for before you can ask for a reference that will be useful?
