What are we looking for in "Encountering conflict"?

For English, we are apparently studying the topic "encountering conflict".

For context, we are required to watch a film "Omagh", a film based off the true story of a bombing by the Real Ireland Republican Army in Northern Ireland to halt the peace process. The protagonist's son is a victim of the bombing (a car bomb) and the the rest focuses on his pursuit for answers and justice (as there aren't enough evidence to prosecute). And of course with a death in the family, the relationships in the family falls apart.

I just watched the whole film, took a few notes about the plot but otherwise got nothing out of it. I couldn't pick up any quotes of great significance.

What are we supposed to be looking for? Sorry if it may seem extremely obvious but English no good. :(

Pretty sure your meant to examine the general themes of the stories, the messages it is portraying, how it portrays this etc.

Your meant to use these themes in your writing.

You most likely have studied contexts in year 11,10 and 9, maybe without knowing it.

I thinkkk?...

The context is called "ENCOUNTERING CONFLICT" for a reason. You must investigate the "encountering" part of the title which would explore the ways in which the characters of "Omagh" responded and dealt the conflicts they faced. So that would include the  family relationships - how they (the family) handled the situation pre and post its destruction.

Furthermore, the most "obvious" conflict here so to speak is a global one - between two oppositions who believe that their cause is the best...and thus the consequential bombing.  Yet also think of the smaller conflicts, for example; was there any clashes in ideas or opinions between minor characters?

Hope that helps.

What is the point of a massive Conflict Journal? [hope this aint an obvious question, but i have no idea]

I'm pretty sure the Conflict Journal is only for the one SAC.
Or is it also for the exams?

i guess its just good to keep and you can just look through it for revision, so when you do your sac you are able to draw on many ideas from various examples of conflicts in the media?
its also helpful for the exam

just a question, for your conflict sac, do you have to do 3 pieces? because for mine, we were marked on 3 pieces - an essay on a personal conflict experienced, an imaginative piece regarding one of the texts (i did mine on the crucible) and then an essay on a prompt (my topic was something like how fear is the driving force of conflict)
i dont know if anyone had to do this last yr too? or have to this yr??

yes, we have to do the three short essays over many periods (i think 3 single periods).
And I'm also doing the Crucible. [the Crucible is so confusing to read]

Thanks for the responses. :)

oh wow, we got to do 2 of the pieces just at home, like over a period of 2 weeks, then the final piece in sac conditions over 2 periods. i only got 26/30 on that sac though, i had no idea what the whole conflict thing was it was never really explained well at the start of the year, i thought we just had to do a simple expository essay!

yeah the crucible is a bit tricky to read at first haha, but it has a lot of ideas you can explore! :) good luck with it all!

for the crucible i suggest watching the movie. it really helps you understand wtf is going on. and remember you need to go deeper than the physical conflict you see before you.

Think about other sorts of conflict. There could be inner conflict within people, or sorts of conflict which whilst not involving physical harm, could cause equally destructive consequences to those involved (such as emotional perhaps). This 'thinking outside the square' is applicable to EVERY context, and you need to go beyond the surface level understanding of these contexts if you want to do better.

Note that I haven't done that text myself, and I'm just hoping that's what she's referring to. In any case, it's something you'll need to do anyway.
