[UMelb] Doctor of Medicine selection requirements for 2011

Selection Criteria
Quote
Selection for the first intake of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 2011 will be based on:

    * Academic Record, mainly the grade point average (GPA) from a completed 3 (or more) year university degree
    * GAMSAT (Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test) or for international applicants only, MCAT (US Medical College Admissions Test)
    * Structured multi mini interview - held in late September or early October 2010

Quote
The prerequisite subjects do not necessarily have to be studied as part of the completed degree. For example, an applicant could complete the subjects separately if they are available as part of the Community Access Program (CAP).

For students not from the University of Melbourne:
Prerequisite subjects (second year anatomy, physiology and biochemistry) must be approved by the Faculty. Please check the following lists for approved subjects from Australian and New Zealand universities:

Victoria:
http://www.medicine.unimelb.edu.au/docs/MDPrerequisitesVIC.pdf
New South Wales:
http://www.medicine.unimelb.edu.au/docs/MDPrerequisitesNSW.pdf
Queensland:

Other states and territories:
http://www.medicine.unimelb.edu.au/docs/MDPrerequisitesOtherStates.pdf
New Zealand:
http://www.medicine.unimelb.edu.au/docs/MDPrerequisitesNZ.pdf

These lists were last updated on 21/5/10 - now with "not approved" units/courses.

GAMSAT 2010 was held on Saturday 20 March 2010. Results are valid for 2 years.

Applications for medicine and dentistry from domestic students close on the 4th of June 2010, which is a Friday.

WOW, thank you :) I never knew there was GAMSAT and admissions info on VCE notes, as given by its name. But since I'm a Biomedicine student now at Melb Uni, all this is very relevant.

Cheers.

Is there any advantages to get into doctor of med by studying biomed over science undergrad?
I heard people said that most of students studying biomed will have higher chances than science ones
But to get high marks in biomed undergrad is harder than science course right?

In order;
No.
People may be confused because more biomed students get in, but that's probably because more biomed students want to do the MD.
Arguably, it's kind of hard to compare. Some parts may be harder, others may be easier.

biomed and science, which course do you think better for preparation med postgrad?

I just don't understand why they have biomed course while we still can choose the same subjects in science course

theres no selection advantage with biomed vs science. but because more biomed kids WANT to do med, and also the biomed cohort's clearly in atar is much higher than science's clearly in, then any randomly selected biomed kid is more likely to get into med than any randomly selected science kid. but again, there is no selection preference given

I think that biomedicine is better preparation, but that's not to say science is not good preparation. Both are obviously completely adequate, I just felt that biomedicine offered a few things I wouldn't have got through science.

You can't choose the biomed exclusive subjects in science, you'll have to do similar ones.

^ I thought UoM undergrad had breadth subjects?
If you choose the same subjects, how can't you get the same things as biomed?

Two reasons
1. Breadth requires you to do other subjects, not just more science
2. Biomedicine has exclusive subjects, otherwise what would be the point of a separate degree?
2a. There's a case for making it a major within science but that's a discussion for the future

UoM biomed has course-specific units and programs that are restricted to students enrolled in that degree only - these are worth looking into as past students speak very highly of them. (Edit: as per above :)))

IMO so long as you have the prerequisites, there are really no other considerations other than doing what interests you and gives you the most flexibility (and these factors are more likely to affect your changes of gaining admission). People obsess about "being prepared" for med and place that high on the list of priorities - IMO it's a somewhat misguided notion, a common one that biomed programs all over the country have capitalised on.

A good preparation for med is basic medical science (e.g. the MD prerequisite sequence) and a degree in which you have applied yourself, established good study habits and gained some insight in to yourself as a future professional, lifelong learner and scholar. IMO a decision to study undergrad biomed should be made according to an evaluation of one's interests and the curricula, not the dubious blanket claims that it is a better preparation.

Is medical science similar to biomed undergrad?

from what im told from the previous MBBS kids and current MD kids, biomed is pretty much the preclinical years of med (obviously not identical)

Id imagine that would be quite different to medical science, but maybe someone whos done medical science can help?
