btw, can someone confirm this - the UMAT overall score is calculated by the mean of the individual sections
so for eg. i can get a lowish score in section 1 but blitz the section 3 and still get a decent overall score?

Not exactly.

The 3 sections are differently weighted to give the overall score. Only ACER knows the exact weighting, which is not publicly released. But yes, you can approximate your overall by taking the average, the sections are quite similarly weighted. So your overall can be high even if one particular section is low.
