I think for most people its just the number they have to scrape to get into their course.

I haven't built up some big arbitrary number or goal, i just want what will get me into my course, anything after that and im happy...

I can't understand personally why people build it up to be anything other than this
I feel very much the same, I couldn't give a damn if I got less than 60 and get into a desired course

That i'm better than 99.95% of all of you.

Seriously, obviously the course but I think myself and alot of others may see it as an accomplishment if they get a score well above their desired course.

for me its being the only successful family member in the country

most family is overseas and i dunno what theyre feeding them over there but theyre all getting into uni (i have no uni family here), i have a cousin who got a scholarship to cambridge university in england for maths, hes 24 and finishing hes masters or something (in other words a genius).

my australian based family academic achievements are well, crap. a sister who went to uni for 6 months before dropping out, cousin who got a atar of ~62 and now works are target....and then me. yay for pressure! so now i pretty much have the pressure of having to overcome my genetic disadvantage, get not only into uni but melbourne uni to match the overseas family and do whatever it takes to get the term "Dr." in my name.

I really don't understand why people are willing to trade off life for a score which they don't even need. Many people's year 12 can be summarised as "study, study, study ..", and they sacrifice everything else. Even people who's required ATAR could comfortably be achieved without stripping their life away.. to me this is a fully perplexing enigma.

It all comes down to a sense of pride in the end as well the feeling of easily getting into your course rather than scraping in makes it more enjoyable for them.

my science course at monash requires a 75.6

if i got an 80 should i be happy?

i mean, i obviously want higher but at the end of the day my score means i get into my course
so should i just be grateful that i got in?

That the hard work paid off - and getting into the course.

Nothing less, nothing more.

I aim for 99.95, because I know I can pull it off if I put my mind to it, and even if I don't reach the top, whatever score I get in the end will be what I deserve for giving it my best shot.
I am confident that I'll have the score needed for the courses I'm interested in, but I'm really hoping for a scholarship, so I'm giving it my all.
I won the GAT: 49/50/50.

Interesting discussion. For me it's a different thing entirely. My course is about 30 below my ATAR but it's irrelevant. It's more the process of education that I'm interested in, and the benefits extracted from it. The ATAR is very much an outcome of the work throughout the year for me. But it's not like it's meaningless, I do care about it. I uncomfortably use it in some way to signify that work that I did because inherent in my character is a greed for results and success accompanying a want for knowledge.

Sounds like I'll have to blog about this...
