Breadth subjects etc - confused

Ive been accepted to do Commerce at Melb UNi.

How many commerce subjects do I have to do a year, and how many 'breadth' ones must I do?

I find the system so confusing, especially with all the points etc. Do you have to do 1 breadth subject and stick with it over the course of the 3 years?

Each year you will do 6 commerce subjects and 2 breadth. You do not have to stick with the same breadth stream all the way through, but you will need to have at least one 300-level (third year) breadth subject.

^Helpful link that.

So who doing Commerce has decided their breadth subjects yet??

So far I'm thinking:
- Principles of Business Law
- Corporate Law
- Taxation Law
- Statistics

And haven't decided on the other 2.

I'm definitely going to do those 3 law subjects for Accounting accreditation, not sure of the others, maybe 800-116 Generating the Wealth of Nations...that looks interesting.

Check this one out:

175-125 Academic English: Economics and Commerce

https://app.portal.unimelb.edu.au/CSCApplication/view/2009/175-125

Description:

Quote
This subject involves the study of economics and commerce content-based English for academic purposes. Students should develop their academic language through a study of Australia's economy and its major economic institutions. Students will develop the ability to speak appropriately in academic settings, communicate confidently as part of a team, read economics and commerce texts critically, take effective notes in economics/commerce lectures, and write reports and assignments fluently and accurately.

Probably not directly related, but nevertheless sounds useful.

Watch out for prerequisites. Stats has a prerequisite of 620-201 Probability which then has its own prereqs...

It depends. Think about how it would look to a prospective employer. It might signal that you have trouble with your English or something when you might not.

And keep in mind that: "Native or near-native speakers of English are not eligible to enrol."

Also if you are thinking of taking Math subjects as breadth you might also want to consider the concurrent Diploma in Mathematics.

Ahhh ok thanks Brendan, think I might scrap statistics and pick up 3 from another area.

Thanks Brendan, I didn't even read the prerequisite bit. Strangely enough, being a native (or near-native) English speaker now rules me out of the 3 first year breadths that I wanted to do. Time to reconsider.

Breadth subjects or subjects in general that are level 3 means they're very hard right?

It means that they're 3rd year subjects, so they're supposed to be fairly advanced, yes.

Yep. You can do any course outside your faculty.

I need to decide on my very last breadth for my degree.

I need a subject that has little contact hours, easy assessment and no exam.

I was thinking of : 740-366 Music Psychology
https://app.portal.unimelb.edu.au/CSCApplication/view/2009/740-366

Not sure though.
