$500: How to spend it?

At the end of last year my grandparents gave me $500 for tutoring for year 12.

How should I/How would you best use this money (plus more) most effectively?

Most likely subjects to use the bulk of funds for would be Methods and English.

Should I attend classes such as TSFX? OR Use a private tutor? OR Use the money on schoolies instead?  ;) Nah, I wouldn't do that...

Only ever been to one tutoring type session: a PE lecture - which was a complete utter waste of time and money.

For Methods and English, I'd probably advise hiring a private tutor since classes are pretty much useless for these two and you won't gain much from it. Also with private tutors, you might be able to arrange having fortnightly lessons instead, because I think that sometimes weekly lessons go to waste from my personal experience since there just isn't enough to do that regularly. So assume $25 an hour, and around 40 weeks in the school year, doing it fortnightly, that adds up to exactly $500. So I guess you'll get one subject subsidised by your grandparents, and you'll have to pay for the other =T

'and PARENTS will have to pay for the other' ;)

I was definitely thinking private...don't like the idea of group sessions.

Yeh definitely go private. Back a while ago, private was something reserved for private school kids and would regularly cost around $40 an hour. Nowadays, there's just so many VCE students going out to tutor that you'll find some going as low as $15 an hour on places such as here. I often see classes actually being more expensive than private now too, such as TSFX and so on.

My advice would be to get a combination of both tutoring and lectures. With tutoring i found it more beneficial as experienced tutors give you exactly what you need to learn. For one of my subjects last year I had a two hour tutoring sessions with a teacher who taught at a private school, and conveiniently marked the exams and wrote the curriculum for that subject, and it worked out well in the end.

My lasting advice would be to do what you think needs to be done to understand the subject thoroughly.
