Qualifications to be a tutor?

Hi all,

I was considering offering my services as a tutor for Literature and Indonesian SL (I know, not the most common subjects!) next year. I'm curious as to what qualifications the typical student would look for in a potential tutor (meaning a tutor who is not a professional teacher or similar). I got a 50 raw in Literature and a 47 raw in Indonesian - would these study scores alone be sufficient, or would you have to profess to have some added experience in tutoring - a "track record" so to speak? Particularly with a subject like literature, which I imagine is more complex to coach someone in than, say, chemistry. Also interested to know if most of you guys would only consider a native speaker for a language tutor, or perhaps only a non-native student if he/she had a 49-50 SS.

Please don't hesitate to be upfront. Thanks.

I had a native tutor for Japanese, but near the oral exam period I had a non-native (white) tutor with a raw score of 47, who gave me brilliant advice for the oral and written exams, which I reckon got me quite a few study score points. I guess being a non-native VCE student does give you an insight into "playing the system" which can really push students to the higher scores, something a Native may lack.

Thanks for that SmRandmAzn. I had suspected that nonnative tutors might have an edge with regards to actual exam content, and difficulties faced by a non-native student. Reassuring to know that you found someone tutoring LOTEs with exactly the same score as me! Maybe I'll give it a go.
