Perhaps not the hardest, but they are right up there.

If you go over to the Japanese SL Top Achievers, most of them aren't even Japanese. This isn't the best indicator since there are plenty of foreigners who lived in Japan for many years but at least it gives you a general indication. It's all about the hard work you put into the subject throughout the year, like any other subject to get your over the 40 Raw line. Anything above that though, I think there's another spark needed to push you up even higher.

What kind of grades in the exam/percentage would you need to get in the exams to get a 37ish?? I know that the exams difficulty changes from year to year and that afffects what percentage you need etc. But generally what kind of grades would you be wanting to get??

Seriously? You guys are making it sound like LOTES are the hardest to obtain 40+ SS now...
I'm in a similar boat to OP though; my class too consists of 8 students, and last year highest at my school (that I heard of?) was 32 RAW in Japanese.
But yeah, let's work do our best. I need a 40+ RAW in Japanese too :(
OMG ALBERT?!

but yeah, highest last year doesn't mean too much, aim to be best in the state rather than best in your class.
That kind of mentality would help imo.
That's what I do anyway.. If I hear some school's jap class is ahead of mine, I endeavor to catch up to that school's class

You have to just follow the guidelines for the essays and assessments. With a reasonable amount of variance in regards to your vocabulary, grammar, kanji etc etc. Stop worrying about a score children.

Exam-wise, if you're scoring above a 60/75, it's good (i.e. 40+. sensei's rule of thumb is take 20 off your exam score). Don't trust exam scores from last year - it was apparently the easiest Japanese exam EVER. A girl from my school last year who got 49 raw got 72/75, with a 14/15 in her essay. -shudders- kowai.
Kanji-wise, unless it's going to reduce the amount of ji in your essays, it's probably unnecessary to learn them (unless you're like me and just do anyway). I advise learning the one for はたらきます(働きます) ;)
For grammar, learn all the VCAA specified ones and then passive, causative and causative-passive. It covers everything you need to know and shows some depth. And use a variety of grammar in essays etc.

With top scorers, I'm probably the least qualified to speak about ranking and such. It's so competitive in my class it's crazy ==lll But take examples of all the 40+ scorers with Japanese names - only a few get those really high scores. It's about hard work, like it is in every subject over a certain point.

Most people stuff up at the exam and oral assessment which, as you would obviously know, weighs the most out of the whole years assessment. So even if you aren't first in your class at the moment, just as long as you know how to cope well at the end of the year, you'll DEFINITELY get over 30 by the sounds of things.

Don't just blame the two students in your class though - imagine the thousands of other students who are just the same. Many of them will probably get overconfident and slack, so you have a chance to beat them by preparing yourself heaps more than them. You can focus on your ranking in class, but ultimately, the exam will be an indicator of where you stand in the state.

Don't lose hope!

Our class is so competitive!!! Arrogance, bitchiness, and then those people who say "I did so bad" when we all know they did well :\
I reckon I am ranked around 4th.. with 2 students who have had a 12 month exchanges in Japan. Hoping for mid-high 30s.

Honestly, from my perspective, getting a 40+ in Japanese is not an impossible dream. Those who find Japanese hard are only those who make it :D Just remember your basic structures (eg. how to write a letter, article, diary entry etc), particles and general vocab as well as the Kanjis and you should be fine :) Good Luck!
I'm aiming for a 40+ in japanese as well :D
Currently in Year 12 Studying: Japanese (SL), English, Maths Methods, Chemistry and Physics
You only get out what you put in :)

Where do we get these practice exams? From what I know, there are only the VCAA, Leading Edge and JTAC ones available - certainly not enough in my opinion. They add up to roughly about 9, I believe. Do you know any other sources that we could use?
