Just 498 V will be fine.

Zeros located to the right of another number after a decimal point are significant
So 498.000 is 6 SF

Yep.  However, if you've got 0.0000000000000000000498 V, then that's only 3 significant figures.  But still, I wouldn't recommend writing it that way.

I doubt it for physics in this case but for Chem, yes.

I think he would because this question is specifically asking for 3 significant figures.

Oh, that's right.  I forgot about that.  Sorry, it's been almost a day since I've read this topic.  In that case, then you're right.  :)

THem is right.  You would lose the mark because the question explicitly says to give your answer to three significant figures.

Although, I would doubt they would ever do that in the exams.  For physics, my advice would be:

1.  If your calculator gives you an answer with no decimals, then put that down.
2.  If your calculator gives you decimals, round your answer to 2 decimal places.

What if you write say 123.45 for working out (you clearly write it there)
But then write 123.5 in the box?
