Hey all,
Just wondering if there is any VN members that are intending to apply for sport scholarships overseas or even in Australia?

 are they common in Australia?

i once read something about Haileybury's "poaching" several sports whizzes in yrs 7+8 and giving them scholarships which outweighed the school's fees

Yeh i got offered a full ride scholarship to go and play tennis for Haileybury,
For my sport, in Australia, scholarships arent that common, although company sponsorships are flying around everywhere.
There arent many institues that promote scholarships in Australia. (i.e VIS, AIS and NHPA)
And majority of the time (from my experiences) they dont seem to provide you with any further incentive to work hard, in fact i believe that the scholarship offers are given, just so that academies/institutes can better the full-paying students, and once they've got what they want from you, termination of your scholarship occurs ...which is quite harsh if you ask me.

But im intending to attend college in America and play tennis over there, ive already been presented with some offers :)

What sport do you play?

I played state basketball last year...i really doubt that anyone would offer a scholarship for that... at my school they wouldn't give a scholarship to the number 2 swimmer in Australia for girls...

I know a guy that got a full scholarship to Hailebury, he plays basketball
You should apply to any institute that you feel is appropriate to your sport.
At the worst all they are going to say is "sorry we cant accept your application yada yada yada"
and they may give you a date of when they are re-signing their contracts for scholarships.
Or you could even be presented with the opportunity to go and try out, outclass a few of the people already on the team, and your half way there =]
Keep applying to every institue possible :)

Is Hailebury dominant in majority of sports?

They've been quite dominant in swimming and diving recently, with premierships from 2004-2007. They've done alright in tennis too, but not recently. In Table Tennis Haileybury's had premierships from 1995-2007 with the exception of 2003. :O

Lol... We don't win table tennis because of scholarships. We win because we have bucketloads of Chinese people.

We had a guy in table tennis who was ranked first in the APS from yr8 through yr12 or something ridiculous. Crazy talent...

they're pretty good in a fair few sports. it depends on what areas they give scholarships in - my old school (st. kevin's) has dominated at cross country and athletics the last few years because they've given sports scholarships in that area (as well as some in rugby, though we've always been dominant in that).

I've heard of them "poaching" an entire volleyball team from another school.

Poaching is such a misused word in this context. We should really say "offered education and money" to an entire volleyball team.
