year 11 vce subject selection help
« on: July 25, 2020, 06:17:18 pm »

hi im in year ten and i need to choose my subjects for year eleven soon. im doing biology 3/4 next year as ive done 1/2 this year but im debating whether or not i should also do further 3/4 in year eleven too. ive done methods 1/2 and im doing good. the only thing is that im worried i wont get a high SS in further because:
1. it scales down - one mistake = one study score? and im sort of prone to making carless mistakes in tests
2. doing it alongside bio and four other 1/2 subjects might be a bit stressful for year11
i also plan to do spesh 1/2 next year, meaning in year twelve ill do methods 3/4 and most likely also spesh 3/4 - therefore, three maths altogether (but only two each year)
my other option would obvioulsy be just doing bio 3/4 next year, which gives me another slot for a 1/2 subject to try out. however, this could mean that if i dont enjoy the non-maths subjects i do, i could be doing three 3/4 maths in year twelve. i also know that doing three maths means not all of them can be in my top four, but i feel like it is my strong-suit but yeah i am a bit worried that ill regret that.

tldr: if i do bio and further 3/4 in year 11, i only have to do four subjects in year twelve but i have less wriggle room and might regret. but if i only do bio 3/4, i have more options but ill be doing five subjects in year twelve (less free periods :( ) and could possibly mean me doing three maths in one year. i also need a high at least 90+ atar, so help me choose which option would get me a higher atar thx

Impossible to know for sure, but, I would advise doing only Bio, and focusing more on getting a good SS for that. Then yes you have fewer study periods, but still, having a good SS at your back going into year 12 would be comforting, I imagine (not having got a good SS myself in the subject I tried, HHD - a subject I would recommend picking up, perhaps, as it is very real-life applicable).

This is contrary to The Cat In The Hat, but I would recommend doing 2 3/4's in year 11. However, I would personally advise against doing all 3 maths subjects as only 2 can be counted into your top 4 when calculating your ATAR. It also narrows your VCE subject "range" which I advise against because unless you are set on continuing maths studies into Uni and life.
2020 - mathematical methods [42] | further mathematics [45]
2021 - english language [45] | chemistry [36] | french [33] | physical education [44]
ATAR - 98.75

I would also advise against doing all 3 unless you know you're going to keep on doing Maths stuff. In that case, I'd advise not doing Further.

if i do two 3/4s in year eleven that means i have limited options for year twelve but also less stress. however bc of the limited options, ill only get to choose my fourth year twelve subject as either spesh or economics/business (still deciding between either one) and i don’t think i’ll enjoy them tbh. so three maths is the most likely route w this option.

anyway idk what i’m saying anymore but if u think i shouldn’t do three maths but only two, do you think it would be easier to get a high score (40+) in further or spesh? thank u

I'm in almost an identical spot right now (Year 10; doing Bio 1/2). I also want to do 2 3/4s next year and probably going to do HHD 3/4 (with the help of AN to decide). I wouldn't do 3 maths, and like a few have said if you have no other option its best to solely focus on Bio next year.
2020: 1/2 Biology
2021: 3/4 HHD, 3/4 Biology, 1/2 Chemistry, 1/2 Specialist Maths, 1/2 Methods, 1/2 English Language

I suggest focusing only one Year 12 subject when you are in Year 11.

Your study and exam technique will develop with experience during Year 11 and will help you prepare for the following year. In Year 12 you will also have the advantage of being one year older and wiser.

You also want to have plenty of time in Year 11 to focus on your 1/2 subjects, in order to gain a good foundation to prepare you for the following year, especially in challenging subjects like Methods and Spec.

I'd say depends, but seems to me you need to be really smart to get that high in further because seems every smart kid goes 'I will get an easy mark in further' although there's ridiculous competition because of them. I have done neither though.
Probably depends on your strengths etc. but I think there's some crossover between methods and spesh, so if you're doing it then you can study for both at once. Again, not done either further or spesh.
