Can you double major in a double Law degree?

Hello,

So I was considering studying a law degree at Monash, doubling with either Arts, Commerce, or Global Studies. As there are no majors for Law, are you able to double major with a Law double degree from any of those three subjects?

After looking through the course maps, I saw that for Law/Art, there were 8 subjects dedicated to an Art major, 4 for a minor, 2 for an elective and 2 for an elective overload or summer semester. Combining the minor, electives and overload/summer semester, that's 8 in total; the same amount as the major. So could you possibly swap all that out for another major?

In Law/Commerce, I noticed that the majority of commerce are core units, so it would make sense if you can't double major. With Law/Global Studies I can't see any subjects that say major, so I am confused as to how you major here.

If anyone with past experience or who just knows what they're talking about could please answer my questions and explain where I am confused, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hey TylerD9 - welcome to ATAR Notes! ;D

This is only anecdotal (I studied straight Arts), but my brother studied Law/Arts and double majored in Arts - in precisely the way you mentioned. :) So I'm assuming it's possible for Law/Arts, but can't comment much with the other two.

I'm sure other members will be able to chip in soon, though! :)

Laws/Arts - Yes, double major is possible by using the 8 major units, then 4 minor units + 4 elective units (creating a major).
Laws/Commerce - No, only 1 major is possible under Commerce due to forced core units.
Laws/Global Studies - Global Studies doesn't run on a major/minor system, but a specialist system. Under Global Studies, rather than having a major, you would specialise in one of 'Global cultural literacies', 'International relations', or 'International studies'. These make up 72 points (12 units) and these are taken alongside core leadership units.

Hope that helped!

Thanks for the response. Considering that Global Studies doesn't let you major then I'll probably end up doing International Relations in an Arts degree along with something else. But thank you :)

No problem at all! Sounds like you're definitely doing your research, which is awesome. ;D

Can't wait to see you around the forums!

EDIT: Just saw your post above. Nice choice with International Relations. I majored in International Studies (and Linguistics), but I'd definitely prefer IR over IS in hindsight. :)

Thanks :) I heard IR is a good major for getting a foot in the door with doing things internationally for Law, and as I want to travel when I'm older I presume that it'll help me out a lot.

Just to add (in case you or anyone else is thinking about it), you unfortunately can't do a double major in Arts if one of your majors is an extended major (9+ unit major) - that is, you can't do an extended major and a standard major; but you can do a standard (8 unit) major and a standard major; or an extended major and a minor; or a standard major and a minor.

How do you know which major is an extended major? I had a look at http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/2016handbooks/undergrad/arts-ba-minor-major-extended-major.html?_ga=2.58053608.337048964.1496126225-194891277.1495966968 and it shows that some majors are also avaliable as extended majors. Could you please clarify this for me? Thank you :)

So basically if you have a look at this link http://monash.edu.au/pubs/2017handbooks/aos/index-bydomain_type-extended-major.html it'll say which ones are extended majors. That link you have should be fine too, the only difference is that it's for 2016 handbook (although generally there isn't a substantial difference between each year). :)

thank you :) also another quick question, I know at some Unis when you do a double major, you can sometimes take your second major from another degree (e.g. science or commerce). Can you do this with Law/Art?

Unfortunately at Monash doing Laws/Arts, the Arts part of the degree are all Arts units only, meaning the majors/minors you pick for Arts have to be listed under the Arts degree in the handbook.

For example, I'm doing Education/Arts, and all units contributing to my Arts degree have to be from Arts units, though, I am doing a Psychology minor (which is not from the Arts faculty, but it's listed as a possible major/minor area of study under Arts).
