the Olympics is way overrated, but the opening ceremony should be "somewhat interesting."

It's the pinnacle of elite sport and the biggest sporting event in the world.. there is no reason why it should be "underrated".

just because there are "elite" athletes there, it doesn't make it any more worthy of being rated greatly. To my opinion, the games just get boring after 3 days. The world cup and tour de france truly own the olympics.

Actually, in terms of economic benefits and worldwide audience numbers, the FIFA World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world.

"The World Cup Finals is the most widely-viewed sporting event in the world, with an estimated 715.1 million people watching the 2006 tournament final.[1]"

"The 2006 World Cup stands as one of the most watched events in television history, garnering an estimated 26.29 billion non-unique viewers, compiled over the course of the tournament. The final attracted an estimated audience of 715.1 million people.[1] The 2006 World Cup ranks fourth in non-unique viewers, behind the 1994, the 2002, and the 1990 FIFA World Cups.[2] "

"As a guide, a 2004 study on the economic impact of the 2003 Rugby World Cup found that the total 'value added' to the Australian economy was $289 million. By comparison, the same study showed that the total value added for the Sydney Olympic Games was $6.5 billion, and for the FIFA World Cup held in Japan and Korea in 2002 was $27.7 billion."
