hey guys! im doing chinese sla next year and was just wondering what preparation i can do?
for my detailed study would 'one child policy' be a good idea or not?

also should i just perhaps write some essays and go through general conversation questions??

any suggestions would be awesome!

There's a thread '2012 Chinese 3&4', but it's mainly for SL
But just look over the suggestions.
One child policy: is it a school thing?
personally, I wouldn't do it: at my day school, it is the topic that the non-chinese background kids do. And too many people do it anyway.
I would choose something that relates to the culture.
good luck!!

One child policy is a popular detailed study so it is definitely a detailed study that you can do. Are you interested in it though? If not, choose something else because it's most certainly much easier talking about what you like. In terms of preparation during the holidays, start doing a lot of listening and translating exercises and by a lot... I really do mean A LOT. When it comes to detailed study month, you'd tend to neglect writing so make sure the areas in the written exam is up to scratch by then; i.e. Start early. If you're unlucky and receive a late oral exam date then it is even more important to be well prepared for the written exam afterall it's worth more. VCE Chinese is almost like doing maths, the more practice you do, the better you will become. By the end of the year, the essays should all feel the same to you regardless of the topic.

personally, I disklike the one child policy. BUT: your choice, honey.
relates to culture: things cultural, such as bonsai, embroidery, a minority etc.
any topic you like is an easy topic. I did tofu this year: loved it as none of the teachers heard about someone doing it before!:)
listening: don't worry about it now. your chink school gives you a booklet with all the past year's listening excercises in it.
translating: same as above.
DO YOUR GENERAL CONVO NOW! it is really important! Get it corrected by different teacher, and re-write it each time after their corrections. then: practise as much as possible.
no, worries

Really? I'd say the written component is much more important than the general conversation aspect of the exam. With the general conversation, if your Chinese skills are at an okay level, you'd be able to come up with any answer on the spot considering the questions are not hard at all. I'd say focus more on written for now as your Chinese hearing/sentence generating skills will improve the more you practice + vocab. That will help you a lot more with your speaking.

awks.
I think everything improved for me when I did my general convo really well, and so my sentences generating skills and hearing etc. got better as I did my oral component.
your choice, hello kitty.

this. practising your oral skills is a really good way to enhance written expression. this is because the oral component demands you to think on your feet and construct sentences on the spot, so with time, you will almost certainly see a marked improvement in your clarity of expression as well as your familiarity with various grammatical structures. what is more, with particular reference to the detailed study, you will indubitably encounter a lot of complicated vocab whilst researching your topic whether online or in a library. increased exposure to topic-oriented vocab can significantly aid lexical development, further improving your writing abilities.

i'd also like to add that although attention to the written component is warranted, your oral abilities will not necessarily improve proportionally. this is because when writing essays, you are given copious amounts of time to think about how to phrase a particular sentence, or express a particular idea, but when you're speaking, this is not the case. this is why i believe practising your oral will also improve the speed at which you are able to write, a useful skill to have especially in the exam.

i want something that will be fairly easy to talk about as chinese is definitely not my strongest subject!
