I used the Collins-Robert French dictionary. It was really big and clunky but it really came in useful during last year's exam when I was looking up particular expressions used in different contexts.

I have this as well.. but then having used it last year, it took SO MUCH TIME looking up one word because there were so many pages! It is really useful for finding expressions... NO DOUBT! However, I've got the Collins-Robert 'normal size' where I'm able to flick through using my thumb.

I'm still conflicted as to which to bring into the exam...

If you use one dictionary (like the collins-robert big dictionary) consistently throughout the whole year, you'll become much quicker at using it and imo it will be much more beneficial...
I went to one of the Alliance Francaise workshops last year and I remember one of the teachers saying that it is possible for students to get so good at using their french dictionary that when you open your dictionary, you're only 1-2 pages off the page you want with your selected word. I thought that was impossible, but practicing this skill is vital and will save you time and hence, marks in the end of year exam.  :)

Yeah, I have that massive blue Collins-Robert French dictionary too. It does seem to take ages to find the right word, but I've found tons of good expressions to go with whatever word I needed which kind of make up for the inconvenience of the amount of pages!

Really? That's awesome!! I should really start looking up words in the dictionary instead of just looking it up online on wordreference or something in that case :/
