Essays for Philosophy

I've been slightly confused about about the assessment aspect of this subject.
First of all, are there any examinations or essays that are done at the university in test conditions? It appears that my exam, at least for this semester is a take-home one.
Secondly, how am I supposed to set it out? Do your lecturers/tutors ever talk to you about it or do you just have to sus it out yourself? I'm not sure if I want to write my mini-paper on Personal Identity (I don't really mind any of the 3 topics and the essay is quite short) but if I choose to do so, I'd have to hand it in in two weeks. I've heard the essays you write on Philosophy in uni are different to VCE ones so I'm clueless as to how they'd want it set out.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance :)
