UMEP Mathematics

Hey Everyone,

I was looking for a little information about UMEP Maths (before, I apply later this year).

1. How hard would you rate it out of 10 compared to Specialist Maths?
2. Is it actually worth it?
3. What sort of mark should I be aiming for in methods and specialist to gain an entry (My school is quite strict about letting their students do extended subjects)?
4. Do I also have to worry about my other VCE subjects (English in particular, seeing that my school is quite strict)?

Do note: I live quite far away from the CBD (does that mean that I will need to achieve nearly-perfect marks in all of my subjects for my school to allow me to do this program?)

Lastly, If you have any past experiences (about any of the UMEP or MUEP subjects), please don't hesitate to talk about them!

1. Compared to spesh, I would probably give it a 8/10. Personally I found some of the concepts quite difficult to grasp, but I put very little effort into this subject as it was my seventh subject (ended up with a mediocre mark). If you spend a descent amount of time outside of class going over the material and doing questions, the subject should be manageable especially for a dedicated student such as yourself. You've just got to put effort in and you'll be fine.

2. It's definitely worth it if you enjoy maths and you're thinking of continuing mathematics at university. But make sure you put effort in, otherwise for me I felt like it was a slight waste of time. The time spent attending classes could have been better utilised.

3. You should be aiming to average A/A+s in Methods and Spesh. The occasional B+ is fine as long as your average is in the As.

4. For all your other VCE subjects, you need an average of B+, so as long as you don't slack off in any of your other subjects, it shouldn't be a problem. You shouldn't need to achieve near perfect marks in all your subjects, unless your school has this policy. However I don't think UMEP has such high requirements.

Additionally, UMEP Maths is run at various school centres, not at the university campus itself. So you can choose the most convenient centre for you.

Hey guys,

I have a little question.

So basically, I am soon about to talk to my Specialist teacher about my interest in UMEP. We had a SAC on Complex Numbers, and I recieved an exceptional mark on it, however, not the best one..... (I recieved 98%, whereas, another student recieved a 100%). Should I go talk to him subsequent to the next test (well, only if I score well), or should I talk to him now (by now I mean quite soon). I really want to do UMEP maths, and don't really want to get denied by my teacher. Any suggestions? (What I mean to say is that how should I approach my teacher?)

EDIT: I am doing quite well across all my subjects except English...(well, my average is a B+)

Speak to him now so he knows your intentions in furthering your mathematics beyond school. WIll allow him to track you throughout the year based on your results to make a decision for the school if you can do UMEP

Just say you are interested in maths, possibility that you might want to be an actuary or statistician(bluff ur way if you have to)

I doubt 98% on a test would be a reason why he'd 'disqualify' you for UMEP maths.

If you're doing methods this year, getting a score 40+ (raw) will generally let you study it for next year

I do, however, I was seeking some strong suggestions from people who have done UMEP maths (or any other UMEP/MUEP subject before). Just want to make sure I don't get denied
