If you want to jump into latin at 3/4 level, why not skip vce entirely and do it at uni?
1st year latin is more or less equivalent to year 12 latin, and you can do all of first
year latin in 6 weeks over summer at melbourne uni. if you get the textbooks when
your yr12 exams finish, you could read ahead to lessen the stress come jan.

the uni textbook's not too bad actually (jones&sidwell), though not as friendly as the distance ed. handbook.
You *can* do 3/4 through distance ed without doing 1/2, someone in my philo class is doing that now. but they've done some latin before and had 'come up to speed'. I've done 1-4 through distance ed and the uni course, and i preferred the uni course. better to get it over and done with in 7 weeks than worry about sacs and deadlines, and worksets etc. otoh, you don't get the scansion and metalanguage for poetic techniques in the uni course.
And yes, to azureblue, latin does help with englang, but you don't need it. i got the same score as someone in my class who didn't do latin.

So there's no scansion in Uni? It's a big part of the 3/4 course, and can get a bit tenuous at times. What does the uni course involve? Cheers.

binders- yeah i can imagine uni being better, and more relaxed, sacs are definitely the worst. but doing it via vce adds to your score, so that's a bonus!

mulan- ha as if! languages are awesome!~

it’s basically all the morphology and most of the syntax. there’s no commentary, essays on style or interpretation in 1st year, just translation and a tiny bit of scansion which is introduced almost as an afterthought. by the end of the year you’ve done the syntax up-to and including concessive clauses. in 2nd year you get the essays and interpretation in the reading classes.

The textbook we used was “Reading Latin” by Jones & Sidwell, which you could look up on google books to get an idea.

yeah, it’s the only good reason to do it in vce imho. i did it and it took the pressure off for enter!

Latin = easy marks (after mark up) as long as you are not overly lazy in the years leading up to it.  Compared to virtually every other subject, the amount you actually learn in Yr 12 to complete the exam is so minimal.  Admittedly, it is marked the most harshly, but generally it doesn't really matter too much after mark up.

2009: English (50), Specialist Mathematics (47), Chemistry (49), Physics (49), Latin (44)

Yay thank you for agreeing that it is, since lately i realised how it was..
You did incredible though, getting 40+ latin is definitely a big achievement. well done.
