How do you write a good commentary?

Any advice and tips on writing commentaries that will impress vcaa markers...? My commentaries need improvement :-\

hey, i know its a bit late but... when you want to write a good commentary you need to make sure that you dont answer it like an exegesis. They are two different things.  you have to comment on what the given passage says about a  particular theme: for example one year the examiners asked to " write a commentary explaining the quranic notion of punishment in islam", verses were given and you had to write a commentary on the theme of "punishment in Islam"
You also need to make sure that you dont summarise the verses as it will make you lose alot of marks because thats not what is wanted. so you have to directly relate the passage with a particular theme. in this case (notion of punishment)
