Creative Writing Advice

Hi AN,
I have this problem whenever I do creative writing pieces, I tend to get carried with all the details of each scene, without actually expanding on the storyline. If I'm doing quite a long essay, I find that it works, but when we are supposed to write a short story in a short amount of time, I find it really difficult to write concisely without feeling like the world that I've created lacks depth. This is kind of a difficult question to ask, but does anyone know I way I can combat this, to try and keep my writing short and sweet? Thanks :)

Hi Redden380_

I think you'll need to address this during your planning. Whatever your planning process may be, there are a few things you need to clarify for yourself: what themes are you exploring/expanding on? through which character/event? why?

Once you've figured this out for yourself, you can now roughly break down your beginning/middle/end and what each part will do (eg, setting the scene, expanding on one aspect of a theme, etc).

I have a playlist of videos on the VCE creative response that you might find helpful here :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7cVoLk-26w&list=PLKOm-s25Y8DZoRkARmxXJA2XdceJ9SPxR
