Hi AN,
I’ll be in yr 12 next year so I thought it would be a good idea to start up a journal where I can detail my thoughts and progress on what’s happening in my boring life.
Some thoughts about basically being a year 12 now:
holy fuckNo, but seriously, I think what’s scaring me is the idea of being a year 12 (eg. the stress, sleep deprivation, being bombarded with SACs, etc), and less so other things. I'm lucky that I don't need to try super hard and constantly be worried about grades, because my ideal undergrad course is very accessible. I'll just see how next year goes and
try to enjoy being in my last year. It's quite nostalgic reflecting on all those years of schooling and knowing that it's all culminating in this one year, tbh.
VCE goals:
Literature – 35+. (Regrettably) my only 3/4. Lit is soooooo taxing, even as a natural English student. I’m hoping I can score at least a B/B+ for the exam, which is in exactly a week from now. Right now I’m just praying for an easy prompt and passages I’m familiar with.
English – 47+. I find English easy so am not too worried about it, but I do struggle a bit with timing. My teacher, who was an assessor, has said multiple times that she expects me to get at least a 40, so I’m hoping to exceed that.
Methods – 33+. Bane of my existence, honestly. I don’t even need it for my course but i think it’s nice to at least do SOME maths (and also it keeps options open). That being said, solving an equation does make me feel satisfied, even though it’s a rare occurrence of being able to do one without any errors.
Biology – 40+. Looking forward to the 3/4 topics as they seem right up my alley, though I am terrified of the mountains of content to be learnt.
Chemistry – 35+. I have mixed feelings about chem; for the most part it’s boring and a pain in the ass, but there are some things that I find quite interesting. I had a look at the study design and literally only 1 area of study looks interesting to me, so yay for an enjoyable year.
Psychology – 47+. Sooo easy and sooo interesting. Probably the only win-win subject for me. Even though it’s content heavy like bio and chem (
), I find it quite easy to remember everything because you can apply most of it to life situations.
Career goals:
I, like 20000 other people, am aiming for medicine. I’ll be trying for undergrad, but I won’t be too disappointed as I would much prefer graduate over undergrad. I think the extra few years of maturing would prove to be invaluable. Also, it seems that the undergrad years are the last chance to explore other interests so I’d take that opportunity to learn some languages.
Why medicine? This is very cliché, but I particularly like the fusion of science and humanities, and am captivated by how the body works. I like that it’s a career where you are constantly learning, and I love the problem solving aspect that comes with diagnosing a patient. I also find it exciting that you get to meet diverse, complex human beings on a daily basis and that you’re being intellectually stimulated with each and every patient.
Interests:
Music – I love listening to 80s and 90s music. Sometimes I wish that I’d been living in those decades.
Film – I especially love action, adventure, musicals, fantasy, sci-fi, comedy, and drama. I'm a sucker for any movie that's either moving or didactic, so feel free to recommend me some from the aforementioned genres.
Reading – This is actually one I’m trying to revive. I’m into more or less the same genres as film and I’ve read ~9 books this year, but 0 if we’re talking non-school-prescribed ones. I was a huge reader in primary, but then high school happened and I just pushed reading aside, and now my attention span is 10x worse thanks to technology
.
Broadway – I just love how it’s a combination of music, theatre, and arguably film. Both singing and acting are an art and it takes serious skill to do both and perform in front of a whole theatre, so it’s no wonder that most of the shows are masterpieces, given that the casts are of the highest calibre. It’s on my bucket list to attend some Broadway shows, so fingers crossed that in the future time and money permit.
TV shows – I’m not a TV show person, but recently I’ve been getting into one. I’ve been watching Scrubs, a medical show, and I absolutely love it! I really enjoy the humour, and as a bonus, it’s also one of the most medically accurate shows!
Languages – currently self-learning some French. If all goes to plan, I’ll know how to speak Chinese, French, and possibly another language before I start med school. I WILL be a polyglot doctor!
That’s all for now, will update whenever I feel like it.
