So I haven't actually discussed this with David yet (he hasn't been online :() but I had this fleshed out on the plane ride home, among a slew of other ideas to make ATARNotes.com better.

But this is the first of them!

We're going to completely overhaul the karma system and reboot it as Community Respect. Karma won't be wiped clean. People with karma will have a small fraction of it retained as their community respect to start off with. I'm thinking maybe 1/50th of karma = your new community respect and you build from there. Numbers are not final, debate those below.

You can no longer 'give credit' or 'karma' to people directly, which was a system mired in abuse and a complete lack of meaning. You have to like their post. If a post gets say 5 or more likes (post your suggestions for numbers below). You get 1 respect point. This stops two people just karma'ing htemselves indefinitely. Many people have to see your posts and many people have to like those posts, and the more people who like your posts the more respect points you get. Could be maybe 1 respect point per 5 likes of your post etc.

If you post an approved set of notes, you get another 'x' points (post your ideas on how many points it should be). If those notes are rated at 4 or above after, say, 10 ratings, you get more respect points.

Basically it will reward quality community participation.

This idea is currently in its infancy so PLEASE I'd like to hear your suggestions below :)

Cheers,
enwiabe

P.S. Now that I'm back in Australia and part-time at uni, this site is going to get about 60-70% of my time and attention, let's make this thing great, k?

Sounds great.

Now people need to round up in groups of 5 or more to cheat this new system. XD

Possible issue/I missed something: What happens if our post only assists one person. So only that person would really 'like' the post. So no community respect there?

Legitimate concern, and I have to admit I don't have an answer for this yet. I'm hoping you guys will come up with something to address this?

maybe every 5 likes in total by different people (on different IP addresses if you can) will get you a point?

And if you help the same person at two different instances?
Then they can't like you twice.

That is the idea. Yes will have to be 5 'unique' likes.

Then they can't like you twice.

But they would have had to help you in two different posts. You can 'like' both of those posts.

yeah. and the mods perhaps could have the power to "unlike" a post someone liked if it wasn't deserved so it works out.

Then I think we are back to the original system. People will just like five different posts of a friend and the system is abused once again. COmmunity respect will be just as useless as karma.

And While we're improving the site.

Sorry, drifting off a bit but: I was trying to get back to the vce notes Index from the water cooler - pretty confusing.

Can we have like links on the top bar that link us back to the vce notes index Page or something?

That's terribly autocratic and thought policing and not something I would implement ever :P

5 different people have to like the same post for the community point to count...

As for your other suggestion put it in a new thread on Sugg board thx.

The number of posts that will get 5 "likes" will be very, very small I think, especially if they are meant to be based on more 'legitimate' reasons..

As I said, numbers are flexible. Do you think perhaps 3 or 4?
