Who else is going to donate their organs :)? I'm going to donate blood as soon I get some time!

There's quite a lot of people who belong to religions where they consider blood as 'holy'. Although its something people won't directly say, there would be people out there who would not feel right in giving someone else their blood to a disbeliever or someone outside their religion and receiving some from one. This is just something that I've observed through experience and I'm sure there are also lots of people who are afraid of syringes as well. So, there would be quite a few who wouldn't even consider this as an option. Many would want to be buried with their organs.

I wonder if societies will change to no longer respect the right to be buried/cremated etc. (i.e.: once you die you do not own your body).

This may become necessary to farm organs (probably not that many are going to be donor-worthy, but still), and to save space. Also, I heard human corpse makes a good fertiliser.

I think one step we should take in that direction (even if we don't want to go the whole way) is to make organ donation opt-out. It is an important nudge to achieving a better outcome. People would probably want to donate organs, if they didn't have to do anything about it -- and fervent opposers to the idea can just opt-out.

Yeah, I have friends who are Jehovah's Witnesses and they carry around cards in their purses that say NO BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS FOR ME EVEN IF I'M GOING TO DIE OTHERWISE. It'd be the same with donating organs.

And then I have friends who don't want to register to become organ donars because they're convinced Doctors won't try as hard to save them just so they can get their organs.

If religion had less influence, people wouldn't be so worried about the afterlife, or having their own little patch of dirt after death. At least, my philosophy is that it doesn't matter what happens to you after you die. Consciousness is an emergent phenomenon, and its source is the universe, not merely human bodies.

I studied a case in criminal law where some poor doctor was charged with assault because he gave a blood transfusion to a Jehovah's Witness (who would've died otherwise)

I am persuaded by the likes of 'libertarian paternalists', who believe that changing the default choice (paternalism), but allowing choice to deviate (libertarianism), has serious potential to benefit society.

in my religion, we put dead people on massive towers of land and then let vultures eat them.
i'm not even joking

edit: and when we die we have to long jump as far as we can over a gap. it's shorter if we are good in life, and easier to do if you are a good long jumper in real life.

again. I'm not even joking
