Manuals are just awesome to drive. Soooo much enjoyment comes out of nailing corners and getting the power down out of a turn.

I recently smelted the clutch in my nissan X trail, cost me $1,648.70 to fix ;D. Admittedly, I took her four wheel driving after specialist exam 2, I was pretty excited and got bogged down in some pretty deep mud.

Ideally, You should rev-match and release the clutch as fast as possible to avoid wear.

Riding the clutch is bad
(however I'd expected the X-trail being a light 4wd to handle more than it did before it gave out.)

Yeah 3rd gear is for when I'm being a bad driver (as is starting in 3rd lol)

And as for the clutch, if you don't abuse it then you won't have to replace it. If you grind your gears etc. then it's a few grand

Starting in third?  It must have been a very, very, very, very steep hill and you were starting downhill.  :P

On a similar note though, where I live is famous for steep inclines so starting in 2nd gear is... well, understandable.
