UNIVERSITY entry cut-offs for 2012 will fall, experts say, making it easier for students who have just finished year 12 to enrol in popular degrees.

Australian Tertiary Admission Ranks are expected to fall under a new system that allows universities to decide how many places they offer, based on the demand from students.

International students aren't eligible for Commonwealth Supported Places though...? Only domestic students are eligible for a CSP.

I figured since we're competing for CSP's, then we're only competing against other domestic students.

You should probably link the whole article, it can be found on the age website.

I think i made a thread about this ages ago and we came to the conclusion that places wouldn't suddenly sky rocket. Especially for places like UoM and Monash, they can't lower the atar too much or they won't be as prestigious or may not have as many quality graduates, ect. Even if they go wild and lower it heaps, they don't have the facilities for shitloads more students without a massive drop in quality.

I love how medicine is the only exception due to 'limited hospital placements'...

Well that is true...it's not so simple as to just throw in some extra interns you know..

Yeah but there's a doctor shortage in Australia and the only place to start is through uni entry ):

That's true--mainly in the non-metro areas though--and also a sever lack of beds and facilities in general. They have to somehow improve the whole medical system..so sad :(

Actually you would have to start by providing greater incentives to established doctors to work with interns in the public health system, at the moment the income difference is so great between public and private that it's hard to convince more doctors to train interns. As dc302 said, the whole medical system has to be improved.

I don't think simply increasing Uni places would help, apparently in America, something like 40% of undergrad Psych students can't find an intern placement and can't progress with their degree after 2nd/3rd year.
