Just wondering if its a good idea to get all the compulsory units for commerce out of the way in First Year or spread it over 2 so that I can balance it with my other degree (engineering)

Doesn't really make a difference dude. I think you'll find having both going throughout your course gives you a nice break from each other.

I can't decide too.. can people tell us what they did? I decided to do all core 6 first but now I'm having second thoughts. Do most do all core units in first year?

Here's a definite good tip for you: Put core subjects that don't lead to your major in your later years, like year 3,4 or even 5. So say u don't want to major in marketing or management right? So you can delay ur marketing and management core unit until later years.
For me, I'm doing eco / commerce double degree, so for me it's easier to do all 6 core units anyway.
