fortran, python, ruby, matlab, Mathematica (if you count that as a language), bash (this one probably doesn't count either), and small amounts of C.

I recommend python to start off with.

umm c# bit of php
well in my personal experience most language uses like the same structure.. so if you learn one language it should be very easy to port that knowledge into another language

I would say that Python is the only language that I'd be comfortable with saying that 'I know', and is definitely the first tool that I reach for whenever possible.

I've toyed around with quite a few languages, most of them only doing simple stuff (basic textbook exercise stuff most of the time) and then a few to the greater extent of actually being able to produce a working piece of software.

I find that if I do need to get something done in a different language, I usually can figure it out and get something that functions (not necessarily the most elegant solutions, however).
