not sure if I've asked this before but if i've already done a 3/4 English subject in a previous year, can I do 4 subjects with no English subject and still get another ATAR score?

thanks

Have you done the 1/2 of that English subject in Year 10? Because you need 3 units of english, and at least 2 units at unit 3/4.

I think your scores/previous units are valid for two years?

Nope.

The VCAA does not prescribe a minimum number of subjects/units that students have to study each year. You can take as long as you need to complete the VCE.

VTAC Source too (from VICTER):
Quote
Studies used in the calculation of the ATAR may be taken over any number of years; however the time taken to complete VCE studies may be taken into account by institutions in considering applicants in the middle-band.

Perhaps that's just your ATAR for university entrance, then.

edited my post above with a VTAC source, so for ATAR too it's also however many years you want to take to do it - but they do state that for middle-band, unis may take time taken into account.

What's 'middle-band'?

If you don't meet the ATAR (e.g. get just under the required ATAR), there's a few criteria that they use to rank those students and determine who gets in and doesn't. These criteria are the ones listed in the VTAC CourseSearch - often it's things like doing certain subjects, getting a score over 30 in English (rather than 25 if that's the prerequisite etc.).

I don't know which universities consider time-taken to complete VCE though.

e.g. for Monash Science: http://www.vtac.edu.au/cgi-bin/coursesrch/course.cgi?&coursecode=28451
"Middle-band: A study score of at least 25 in two of biology, chemistry, geography, mathematical methods (CAS), physics, psychology or specialist mathematics = an aggregate 2 points higher per study, maximum 6 points; SEAS."

Middle-band

Additional factors considered for selection.
•    Middle-band factors are considered for approximately 20% of places, after the ‘clearly-in’ applicants have been established based on their ATAR alone.
For more information about middle-band see About selection criteria (page 16).

anyway, if it does turn out that you're able to drop English Language and go off your previous English scores, be sure to consider if you'll still be able to get the required ATAR to get into the course you want with that English score in your top 4. (would there be any other things to think of? I can't think of any other issues)

^  Thanks a lot

I'm confident I'll be able to achieve the required ATAR with just the 4 + previous scores. I hope I'm able to drop the subject, if not, i probably just won't show up or something lol
